Nemesis Closure: Make or Break?

Nemesis, one of the Big Seven at Alton Towers, has closed due to track refurbishment to give it a longer life, but at what cost?

A lot of fans of the ride love the original sci-fi aesthetic and re decoration could ruin the fan’s love for the ride, dealing a devastating blow to the park’s popularity.

In 2021, Nemesis was voted the best attraction at Alton Towers. A review of Nemesis from Nick Sim, the founder and lead editor of the Theme Park Tourist website, said: “It took an exciting new ride type and combined it perfectly with its surroundings.”

In 1993, Alton towers recorded 2,600,000 visitors but in 1994, Nemesis’ opening year, there were 3,011,000 visitors which is the all-time highest for the park. It has also managed to spawn some sister attractions, Nemesis Sub-Terra and Nemesis Inferno.

Nemesis is due to finish refurbishment and reopen in 2024. Using the figures from the previous paragraph, and due to the long closure and reopening of the new Nemesis, it’s reopening year could possibly be the best year for the park.

  1. I guess it’s safety related. They dont want to have a repeat of the smiler crash where someone lost a leg…

  2. Do they consider re-mapping the route of the ride when doing these updates so that when it re-opens it has a different twist and turn? How would you change it?

  3. Better to ensure the ride is safe and the tracks up to date. Longer queues perhaps as everyone will want to try the new ride.

  4. One of my favourite rides at Alton Towers! Pleased I’ll get chance to go on it again when it reopens.

  5. I went on Nemesis during the school trip to Alton Towers in October. It looked too scary to go on, but then a group of small kids went on ahead of me and my pride as a man left me no choice…
It was fun! Though I nearly lost my shoe from all the twists and turns. Maybe the refurbishments are to fish out the things that were flung off from the passengers. It would be a shame if they lost the cool sci-fi/Cronenberg-y theme, that was pretty unique.
Looking forward to reading your next article!
