Kaleidoscope- ‘A unique viewing experience’: Is it worth the hype?

Netflix have had a rather controversial run of releases (in terms of their own series) amidst this haze, a new and unique series was released. Kaleidoscope is a series that can be watched in any order. But does this new style of viewing really portray the story, how does this ‘new’ style compare to a more ordinary way of viewing and, is it really any good?

Netflix, in an introductory episode, sold this series as a ‘unique viewing experience’ in which you can ‘witness a heist, 25 years in the making’. The unique thing about this series is that Netflix gives you a random order to watch it in and, it should make sense any way you would wish to view it. Even-though this is the case, you are suggested to conclude the series with the episode entitled: White. This is the episode that contains the heist and is the culmination of the series.

Netflix have made some bold statements there. But do the opinions of viewers match up with these claims?

Reviews were tied with the main proportion of reviews being either 1 or 10 stars. One reviewer on IMDB said Kaleidoscope was an ‘absolutely fantastic show’ and they described each episode as ‘almost a mini story in its own right which added to the main show.’ On the contrary, another reviewer stated ‘Atrocious. The initial idea was good, I was anticipating a powerful heist movie… but it turned [out] to be [a] useless disaster… Don’t waste your time, it’s once again a question whether to renew my Netflix of not, I’m very disappointed.’

There seems to be a general divide on whether this series is actually any good.

In conclusion, we can firmly say that this series is unique. Personally, we have chosen to watch this series in chronological order and we do not see why the series is so controversial, this may be because we have not finished it yet. We will be back shortly with our full run down on the series. In the meantime we would love to hear your opinions on the show or the format itself down in the comment section.

  1. This sounds like a fascinating and intriguing way to watch a series, often a series can start with a hint of the end and then unravel. I might try the random approach to viewing.

  2. Ah, that sounds really interesting! I didn’t even know about this series but will check it out!

  3. This sounds like a fascinating film – after reading your article I am going to watch it to see if I would give it 1/10 or 10/10.

  4. Very interesting read and thought provoking. Will cast judgement on whether to watch this. Nice article.
