The West Midlands is turning 50!

Do you know a volunteer making a real difference in your local community?

The West Midlands is turning 50! But what makes our region so great? From lending a helping hand to lending an ear, our volunteers are the true spirit of the region – and we want to celebrate them all.

The West Midlands Lieutenancy 50forWM50 campaign, supported by United by 2022,  aims to recognise and thank volunteers who are making a real impact in their local area.

Nominations are now closed, but stay tuned, as one inspirational volunteer will have a West Midlands Metro tram named in their honour!

What is the 50forWM50 campaign?

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the West Midlands county and the West Midlands Lieutenancy. To celebrate, the 50forWM50 campaign was launched to recognise and thank volunteers across the region who dedicate their time to helping others, and highlight the inspirational stories of these often unseen and unheralded local heroes.

How does it work?

From March to April 2024, you could nominate a local volunteer hero via our website.

Volunteers of all backgrounds and ages, helping their communities in any of the seven local authorities in the West Midlands – Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall or Wolverhampton – could be nominated for recognition.

There was no age limit for nominees, or time limit for how long the individual has volunteered – it could be one month, one year, or 50 years!

From these nominations, a dedicated judging panel will now select 50 volunteers from each of the seven local authorities, who will be invited to join the ‘Big Thank You Bash’ in June. Those 350 volunteers will then be narrowed down to just 50, and from that final shortlist, just one volunteer will be chosen for their outstanding contribution.

As a special thank you, the chosen volunteer will have a tram on the West Midlands Metro named in their honour, as a lasting tribute to their commitment to volunteering and positive impact on their local community!

Please note, nominations are now closed.

How can I get involved?

Nominations closed on April 17th, 2024.

Stay tuned to hear more about how we will celebrate those volunteers who were nominated and which lucky volunteer will have a West Midlands tram named after them!
