Tower Hamlets Community Monitoring Group volunteers

The Tower Hamlets Community Monitoring Group (CMG) is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to join the group and help hold Tower Hamlets police to account. Please click here for more information about us or scroll down to the bottom of this page for our application form and person specification.

What will the work involve?

  • Going through data related to stop and search and other police activities and analysing it for disproportionality and other issues of concern;

  • Attending police station(s) to scrutinise Body-Worn Video footage (only for volunteers aged 18 and over) and other materials related to police activities;

  • Attending in-person meetings every two months with Tower Hamlets police representatives to hold the police to account and raise issues impacting the community;

  • Feeding into papers ahead of each meeting, including the agenda;

  • Maintaining good relations with community and youth groups within Tower Hamlets to ensure the CMG is across policing matters impacting borough residents.

What will the hours be?

We expect the above will amount to 10 hours a month, although this is flexible.

Who are you looking for?

We particularly welcome applicants with lived experience of policing, i.e. people who have been impacted by the police either directly or indirectly, such as via friends and family. In addition, we welcome applications from people from marginalised backgrounds, people with in-depth knowledge of policing, and/or people who have good data analysis and research skills. Ultimately, we are looking for applicants who are passionate and committed to holding the police to account and ending disproportionate and discriminatory policing.

The CMG understands that applicants who have been at the sharp edge of policing may be reluctant to engage with the police or may feel intimidated doing so. We commit to putting measures in place to ensure any members feel supported and able to speak to officers and challenge them where necessary.

Please note, that it is an essential requirement that you have some connection to Tower Hamlets, such as living, working or studying here (whether now or in the past).

Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from people aged under 16, holders of elected office, and/or current MOPAC or Met staff.

How will the role benefit me?

The role is unpaid, although volunteers can claim reasonable expenses. We believe successful applicants will benefit by working with the CMG and other community groups to ensure better policing in the borough.

What if I need reasonable adjustments?

If you need reasonable adjustments for the interview process or in the role, please tell us in your application. This won’t affect how we look at your application – we want to accommodate your needs whenever possible. If you become a member of the CMG, we will do our best to make any reasonable adjustments you might need.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a short, informal interview with the CMG co-chairs. This can be in person or remotely via MS Teams. We can also make reasonable adjustments to suit you.
