The STM Early Career Publishers Committee (ECPC) is comprised of all types of early career professionals (ECPs) who work in the publishing and scholarly communications industry from STM member companies interested in developing, learning, and fostering engagement across our industry. The committee aims to provide resources and organize events for ECPs, advocate for and drive diversity, equity, and inclusion in publishing, facilitate learning and development, run an industry mentorship scheme, and raise awareness of career paths and opportunities for industry professionals and graduate students.
Membership
Any STM member organization can put forward colleagues for inclusion on the ECPC, and the committee size varies. Members are limited to two representatives from one geographical area and three total representatives each.
Early Career Professionals are defined by ECPC as anyone with ~0-10 years’ experience in the industry- age is not a factor. The ECPC does include some mid-career professionals as well.

Work Plan
ECPC has three unique areas of focus that advance the committee’s overall strategic initiatives- career development, graduate engagement, and outreach. Additionally, ECPC runs the annual STM Mentoring Scheme which connects individuals in STM member organizations to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, expertise, skills, insights, and experiences, and to support professional development and goals across all career levels. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are placed at the forefront of all ECPC initiatives in support of STM’s work to achieve equality and equity in scholarship and scientific advancement.
In 2024, ECPC is planning the following initiatives:
- Launch the 2024 Mentorship cohort and host introductory webinars
- Host two networking events specifically geared towards early career professionals
- Host two informational webinars for early career professionals
- Convene a series of brainstorming calls on outreach and engagement for underrepresented geographies
- Define and execute a recruiting push for underrepresented member organizations
Participation
If someone volunteers to participate in the ECPC they agree to work actively on assigned projects for a minimum of one year. All members are expected to assist with the Mentorship Scheme administration and launch. The lift is typically 2-10 hours per month including monthly committee and project calls which members are expected to participate in unless excused. Occasionally, the committee works on more robust initiatives which may require a small number of additional work hours. The monthly committee calls for 2024 will be held on the first Thursday of every month from 8:00-9:00 AM ET.
