The Service
What is the NHS CPCS?
The NHS CPCS (Community Pharmacist Consultation Service) is an Advanced Service where patients are referred to a community pharmacist for a minor illness consultation or urgent medicines supply by NHS 111. The NHS CPCS commenced October 2019.
Part of the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework, it replaces the NHS Urgent Medicine Supply Advanced Scheme (NUMSAS) as well as local pilots of the Digital Minor Illness Referral Service (DMIRS).

Who is eligible to provide the NHS Community Pharmacists Consultation Service?
Any community pharmacy in England which meets the requirements for service provision can register to provide the NHS CPCS.

The CPD Course
Who is running the NHS CPCS CPD online workshops?
This CPD is funded by Health Education England (HEE), and is being run by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) in partnership with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).

Why should I attend the NHS CPCS CPD online workshops?
The CPD course will introduce learners to clinical examination skills in order to demonstrate the scope of what pharmacists can perform within their community pharmacy.
The focus is on clinical assessment skills to support clinical consultations held with patients referred to the pharmacy as part of the CPCS.
Learners and trainers will also discuss strategies and share experiences of building collaborative working relationships between Community Pharmacy and General Practice

How much does it cost?
Our CPCS courses are free for all attendees, as they're fully funded by HEE.
However, we ask all attendees who miss their booked session to pay a small £30 fee towards reorganising the missed session.

What will I need to do to complete the RPS/RCGP course?
In order to complete the RPS/RCGP CPD course, you will need to:
- Virtually attend the two online sessions provided by RPS/RCGP.

Who is the RPS/RCGP CPCS CPD course for?
The RPS/RCGP CPD course is for community pharmacists in England who are/will be delivering the NHS CPCS.

How long is the RPS/RCGP CPD course
The RPS/RCGP CPD course is delivered over two online CPD sessions, each with a runtime of 2 hours, delivered a week apart.
Pharmacists will be taught the required skills to deliver the NHS CPCS and have a chance to put them into practice and obtain feedback from GPs and other healthcare professionals.

When is the RPS/RCGP CPD course?
Bookings for the RPS/RCGP CPD course open from March 2022. From this date, you will be able to book on to any available course shown on the website. To make the sessions as accessible as possible, we’re running five time slots each week. You can choose the sessions that work for you on weekdays or weekends, daytimes or evenings.
Courses are available during the following time-slots:
- Tuesday evenings at 7pm
- Wednesday evenings at 7pm
- Thursday mornings at 9.30am
- Sunday mornings at 9.30am
Learners just need to complete one registration form for the course.
When registering you will be given the option to select a Session 1 & 2 pairing that works for you.

To participate in the digital course, learners will need:
- a device with both audio and visual features
- internet connection.

Please go to our CPCS events listings to select the course time that works best for you. You’ll just need to complete one registration form to sign up to the course, which includes both session 1 and session 2.
Once registered, you’ll receive a confirmation email at the time of booking. Unfortunately sometimes our emails can go to your junk folder. Please check your junk mail, and if they're not there, contact [email protected].
We’ll then be in touch both one week and one day before your sessions with the joining details.

What will the RSP/RCGP CPD course cover?
This CPD course provides an update on the essential knowledge and skills that pharmacists will use to deliver the NHS CPCS.
By completing the course, pharmacists will learn how to:
- Perform clinical examinations
- Identify red flags during consultations
- Support clinical decision-making with evidence-based practice
- Involve patients in decision-making
- Conclude consultations with safety netting, signposting and referrals
- Promote self-care and prevention measures
- Build relationships and work effectively in collaboration with GPs and other healthcare professionals.
