The UK government has announced the launch of a £400,000 fund to help boost the security of internet-connected products. Innovators will be able to apply to develop assurance schemes which demonstrate that a device has gone through independent testing or an accredited self-assessment process. The schemes will help consumers decide which products are the most secure.
Commenting on the initiative, Digital Minister Matt Warman said:
“We are committed to making the UK the safest place to be online and are developing laws to make sure robust security standards for consumer internet-connected products are built in from the start.
This new funding will allow shoppers to be sure the products they are buying have better cyber security and help retailers be confident they are stocking secure smart products.”
The introduction of assurance schemes is a growing necessity. According to research that the government cited in its announcement, there will be more than 75 billion internet-connected devices around the world by the end of 2025. If connected devices stop receiving important security patches but continue to be used, criminals will have an easier time hacking them and stealing personal information.
For those looking to apply to the fund, the government has set up a unique web page which contains all the important documents that people need to apply. Those who are interested in applying should do so by 30 June 2020, after which date applications will no longer be accepted.
