Young people are the future of our city, but many of London’s most disadvantaged young people are uncertain about what their future holds.

Over the past few years, disadvantaged young people have disproportionately felt effects of the pandemic and cost of living crisis. Not only were they most impacted by school closures and job market shocks, existing inequalities between them and their peers deepened.

Although all young people feel these consequences, for some young Londoners it’s exposed just how unequal their opportunities access is.

We know tackling such huge inequalities needs widespread change - providing access for young people to positive opportunities is central to this. That’s why our New Deal for Young People was created; to ensure 100,000 disadvantaged young Londoners have access to high-quality mentoring.

Ensuring that all young Londoners can access incredible opportunities has been a key Mayor's priority, creating life-changing impact with ground-breaking young Londoner investment. To date, the Mayor has supported 350,000 young people to access positive opportunities, so they can make the most of their talents, take advantage of London's amazing opportunities and be diverted from crime.

What we’re doing to support London’s young people

The New Deal for Young People (NDYP) aims to build a fairer, more equal and more prosperous London, where no-one is left behind.

What we're focusing on

Mentoring

We want young people to feel empowered, taking ownership of their lives and futures. To do so, they need to both see and truly believe in their potential.

Mentoring supports them with this - building a trusted, positive relationship over time can help motivate and equip young people to change their lives. It supports skills development, coping strategies and confidence.

The skill and drive needed to build transformational, trusted relationships is a fundamental principle of high-quality youth and community work.
