Young people are the future of our city, but many of London’s most disadvantaged young people are uncertain about what their own future holds.

Over the past few years, disadvantaged young people have disproportionately felt the effects of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis. Not only were they most impacted by school closures and job market shocks, the inequalities that exist between them and their peers deepened.

Although all young people are feeling the consequences, for some young Londoners it’s exposed just how unequal their access to opportunity is.

We know that tackling inequalities of this scale requires widespread change and ensuring young people have access to positive opportunities is central to this. That’s why our New Deal for Young People was created; to ensure 100,000 disadvantaged young Londoners have access to high-quality mentoring.

Ensuring that all young Londoners have access to incredible opportunities has been a key priority for the Mayor, creating life-changing impact with ground-breaking investment in young Londoners. To date, the Mayor has supported 350,000 young people to access positive opportunities, helping them make the most of their talents, take advantage of the amazing opportunities London has to offer and divert them from crime.

What we’re doing to support London’s young people

The New Deal for Young People (NDYP) aims to build a fairer, more equal and more prosperous London, where no-one is left behind.

What we want
  • 100,000 disadvantaged young Londoners have access to high quality mentoring opportunities.
  • All young Londoners have access to quality local youth activities.
  • To increase the quality, quantity and sustainability of mentoring and youth activities in London.
What we will do
  • Improve the quality of mentoring by building capacity of the youth sector.
  • Increase strategic investment in London’s youth and mentoring activities.
  • Empower system change and sustainability within the youth sector.

Mentoring

We want young people to feel empowered to take ownership of their lives and their futures. But to do so they need to not only see their potential; they need to truly believe in it too.

Mentoring supports them to do this. Building a trusted and positive relationship over time can help motivate and equip a young person to change their lives; supporting the development of skills, coping strategies and confidence.

The skill and drive required to build transformational trusted relationships is a fundamental principle of high-quality youth and community work.
