“I have had the pleasure of working with Lorna, and I can confidently attest to her exceptional skills. With her extensive knowledge and experience, she possesses a deep understanding of medical affairs, clinical research, and regulatory compliance. Her strong background in the healthcare industry makes her the ideal candidate to establish a medical function and develop a comprehensive medical strategy. One of Lorna's standout qualities is her ability to build and maintain key relationships with stakeholders and KOLs. She excels in effectively communicating complex medical concepts to diverse audiences, which allows her to establish trust and credibility with key individuals in the industry.”

How can you involve patient advocates in research?
The key here is developing a collaborative and partnership model of effectively working together on a strategy for dissemination. Patient groups may be low on content for their website, so may be very keen to include new research data on their website. Patient experts and advocates may already be speaking at conferences and events and therefore will be motivated to share new research data in their presentation. Having a common communications strategy can help researchers and patient advocates identify which platforms or events to disseminate research, and to decide on formats on delivery of communications. Patient advocates are very well placed to review for plain language, to ensure the materials are translatable for the patient community.

How can you involve patient advocates in research?
I agree with John, representation is key. Patient advocates may not represent all patient voices, therefore, it is good practice to engage with independent patient experts as well as patient advocates, plus patient organisations and carers of course too. Co-creation of research questions, plain language translations, design of research delivery and operations and planning also hugely benefit from having representation, therefore the earlier the better for engagement activities for research.
