Working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change and call for ambitious policy.

About us

We Mean Business is a global nonprofit coalition working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change. #FossilToClean Together we catalyze business leadership to drive policy ambition and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. All countries and all businesses can seize the opportunity and go all in to halve emissions by 2030. Together we can create an inclusive net zero economy, build resilient communities and limit global heating to 1.5°C. The low-carbon transition is underway and forward-looking businesses are harnessing climate action as a driver of innovation, competitiveness, risk management and growth. We are mobilizing businesses to set ambitious targets and equipping them to seize the opportunities of the low-carbon transition. Hundreds of businesses have helped kick-start this transition by setting science-based emissions reduction targets and taking action to deliver against those targets by committing to transition to 100% renewable power. But it is not happening fast enough. The necessary speed and scale of the transition requires all companies and sectors to engage proactively to reduce emissions at the rate required to avoid dangerous climate change. Which is why our coalition is working together to catalyze further, faster corporate climate action. The coalition brings together seven international nonprofit organizations: BSR, CDP, Ceres, The B Team, The Climate Group, The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group, WBCSD

🗣️ 'As the leader of a business coalition, I couldn’t agree more. Business bears significant responsibility for the world’s emissions, yet it also possesses numerous avenues for reducing and halting these emissions - be it through advancements in technology, investment strategies, or providing influential leadership to catalyze action among markets and policymakers.' Our CEO, María Mendiluce, delves into these perspectives in her latest article, 'New National Climate Plans Must Act As Economic Strategies,' featured in Forbes. 👉 Read more https://lnkd.in/ecg5r2uu #WMBC #ClimateAction #NDCs

  • 👏 Thank you to the many partners, businesses and other supporters involved in our collective efforts for the journey from #FossilToClean that have sent a clear signal to global policymakers. At #COP28, over 200 leading businesses with a combined annual revenue of $1.5 trillion called for the phase-out of fossil fuels and the rapid expansion of renewable energy and energy efficiency. ✅ The result? A ground breaking COP28 UAE Consensus, committing nations to triple global renewable energy capacity and double the energy efficiency rate by 2030, alongside concerted efforts to transition away from fossil fuels in line with climate science. Recent affirmations from #G7 nations further underscore the acceleration toward clean energy. 🎯 What's next? As we navigate through turbulent political waters, continued public support for immediate climate action is vital. 🤝 What can business do? Companies play a crucial role in amplifying the #FossilToClean message and can help urge policymakers to set ambitious goals and enact supportive policies to speed up the phase-out of fossil fuels. Join over 200 companies in urging national governments to address the primary cause of climate change - burning fossil fuels - by adding your company name here: https://lnkd.in/gMSxvCFW #WMBC #fossilfuels

❗ We just reopened our #FossilToClean letter, and I urge every corporate leader in my network who hasn’t already signed to do so. And if you already have, how can you help bring along new signatories? We hugely value the 200 companies that put their names to the letter in the run up to #COP28 last year. It was a critical advocacy tool for us in the many events and meetings we had with policymakers and with the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, UNFCCC Secretary General Simon Stiell and COP President Mukhtar Babayev. We were able to show the strength of company support for urgent action by governments to transition away from #fossilfuels. This has always been the We Mean Business Coalition’s role – to channel the voice of progressive business to policymakers – and it was clear again at the Petersberg Climate Dialogue last week how governments want to hear from businesses who are on the side of climate action. Now we have an international agreement in place and this week we saw a clear assertion from #G7 Climate and Energy Ministers that the phase out of fossil fuels and scaling up of clean energy will be included in G7 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Next are the G7 finance meetings and Leaders’ summit, the G20 and #COP29 - and meanwhile, countries are working on their NDCs. Companies that are serious about tackling the climate challenge need to send a strong signal to policymakers: business cares and wants ambitious policies, and for governments to stay the course and not change plans. Every politician and corporate leader has to decide what side of history they want to be on. Ask yourself, what is the world that we want for our children and future generations? In the Philippines, Bangladesh and India, children haven't been able to go to school because of extreme heat (https://lnkd.in/eVK3BucF). And for many people during a recent extreme heatwave in the Sahel, additional warming attributed to climate change was the difference between life and death (https://lnkd.in/edaMJpfJ). I call on companies to speak up - and I urge governments to listen. We need decisive action on climate. That means decision action to phase out fossil fuels: https://lnkd.in/e5rgGbE4 #WMBC #ClimateAction

  • 🆕 In the coming days, the Climate, Energy, and Environment Ministers from the #G7 group of advanced economies will meet in Italy, on the road to the G7 Leaders’ Summit in June. This year’s G7 brings an opportunity for governments to show how they will deliver on the strong international agreement from COP28 to accelerate the transition away from #fossilfuels this decade, in line with climate science.  And moving to clean energy isn't only about environmental responsibility - it's key to stable, thriving economies, says Gillian Nelson, Director of Policy at We Mean Business Coalition.   G7 Leaders and Ministers must progress this opportunity to build the foundation for greater energy security and long-term economic benefits. Businesses are looking for clarity on policy action to phase out fossil fuels and build renewable energy capacity so they can accelerate the decarbonization of their business models and put in place the necessary plans and infrastructure across their value chain. Italy, as G7 president, has an opportunity to demonstrate global leadership. The target is set for 1.5 °C. Now it’s time for action to get there, including:   1️⃣ Deliver on the 2023 G7 commitment to phase-out unabated fossil fuels, and the UAE Consensus, by committing to set national targets and timelines, embedded in new NDCs, for the phase-out of unabated fossil fuels in line with 1.5°C. These should be supported by national plans and policies to ensure a just transition for affected workers and communities. 2️⃣ Commit to embed in new NDCs how national targets will contribute to global goal to triple renewable energy capacity and double the average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030, and report on collective progress so far. 3️⃣ Commit to achieving fully decarbonized power systems by 2035. 4️⃣ Communicate national action plans to reform fossil fuel subsidies by 2025 with detail on how these subsidies will be repurposed toward energy efficiency, renewable energy and other measures to support a just, people-centered and inclusive clean energy transition. 5️⃣ Support countries in the Global South in diversifying their energy systems and developing 1.5°C-aligned economic pathways, including through the provision both of finance that does not exacerbate unsustainable sovereign debt, and of capacity-building for just transition planning (https://lnkd.in/e3P-ZKez). With bold business and political leadership, we can scale clean energy and end our reliance on fossil fuels. Let’s build on our current momentum and pick up the pace. #WMBC #FossilToClean #COP28

The statement on 9 April from the Board of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), released as part of the process of revising the SBTi’s Net Zero Standard, was a strategic steer to further explore the role that Environmental Attribute Certificates, including carbon credits, may be able to play in climate mitigation. It marks a significant milestone in the global battle against climate change. In the context of the urgent challenge we face to reduce emissions, this is a bold step that will help accelerate corporate climate action around the world.  Countries committed to the Paris Agreement almost a decade ago. They are now discussing the update and ratchetting – increasing the ambition of – their emission reduction plans. Around the world, thousands of companies have made commitments to cut their emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Yet the money hasn’t followed... The potential for SBTi to update the scope 3 guidance and their Net Zero Standard is not a carte blanche for companies to use any instrument at their disposal but a limited, strategic and high-quality addition to their climate toolkit.   Read more in a new op-ed published in Reuters by María Mendiluce, CEO, We Mean Business CoalitionScience Based Targets initiative, and Mandy Rambharos, Vice President, Global Climate Cooperation, Environmental Defense Fund: https://lnkd.in/dkUuy5ck
