About us
The Hong Kong Shipowners Association was incorporated in 1957 by 11 local shipowners with the purpose of creating a forum for shipowners resident in Hong Kong. Over the past 65 years, the Association has grown into one of the world’s largest Shipowner Associations, its members owning, managing and operating a fleet with a combined carrying capacity of over 145 million deadweight tonnes. The Association’s chief purpose is to promote and protect the interests of the Hong Kong domiciled shipowners and ship managers as well as the increasing number of local professions and services upon whom they rely in the performance of their business.

On 17th January, #HKSOA and PwC Hong Kong jointly hosted a seminar on the BEPS2.0 Pillar Two-Impact on shipping businesses. The OECD Inclusive Framework has adopted a two-pillar solution to address challenges arising from the digitalisation of the economy. Pillar Two introduces a global minimum Effective Tax Rate (ETR) for multinational groups with consolidated revenue over €750m. Several jurisdictions, including EU countries, Japan, and South Korea, have already announced the implementation of GloBE rules and a Domestic Top-up Tax of 15% in 2024. Jurisdictions which offer preferential shipping tax regimes, including Hong Kong and Singapore, will start implementing Pillar Two in 2025. GloBE rules provide an exclusion for International Shipping Income and Qualified Ancillary International Shipping Income. It is, however, common for shipping groups to have income streams that do not fall within the exclusion scope. Shipping groups should take action now to assess the potential impact of Pillar 2 on their different streams of income and plan ahead for the way forward. PWC Tax experts @florachan and @ivanlam shared their deep insights on the issue and potential implications on the shipping business. They gave valuable advice to the members on the way forward. The event was very well received by the industry and was well attended by the Association members. #hksoa #maritimehongkong #bepspillartwo
