Today, we proudly join millions around the world in recognising International Nurse Day and honouring the incredible contribution of NHS nurses. This special occasion serves as a reminder of the invaluable role nurses play in our communities and the selfless dedication they display, day in and day out. Everyone affected by breast cancer should receive the highest quality treatment, information, and care, especially when it comes to support from their clinical nurse specialist. However, metastatic breast cancer patients are often left out due to capacity constraints within the NHS and disparities in care, among other challenges. As healthcare professionals highly knowledgeable about the disease, treatment options, and the needs of individuals with secondary breast cancer, nurses play a vital role in coordinating patients' care. They act as advocates, providing guidance and signposting to ongoing support, information, and resources. Thanks to them, patients can truly embrace and live their #momentsthatcount to the fullest. On this #InternationalNurseDay, hear from Dr. Victoria Harmer from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust on what it means to be a breast cancer nurse and the most memorable milestones of her career. Join us in wishing many more #momentsthatcount for nurses and their patients around the UK! #NovartisOK

The decision to have newborn screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in the UK has been further delayed. This means that babies born with SMA are still only treated once symptoms appear, leading to irreversible damage. Despite the availability of potentially life-changing treatments, the NHS is currently spending on innovative treatments as well as lifelong support and interventions for these babies. The human cost is devastating: since 2019, an estimated 345 babies have been born with SMA, all of whom will have irreversible disabilities despite the fact that the first SMA treatment has been available in the UK since that time. We are joining forces with the SMA and rare disease communities to urge the UK National Screening Committee to make a decision on whether newborn screening for SMA will be implemented in this country as soon as possible. Find out more and read the recommendations from our policy report here: https://lnkd.in/eznXsf9R Because for babies born with SMA, #EveryMomentMatters. #NovartisOK

The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) is currently reviewing the case for newborn screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Last month, we were honoured to bring together children living with SMA and their families with MPs in the Houses of Parliament to explain why this decision is so important and the urgent need for action. We join the SMA and rare disease communities in imploring a decision to implement newborn SMA screening in the UK to be made as quickly as possible. For babies with SMA and their families, #EveryMomentMatters. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eznXsf9R. #NovartisOK

For too long, health research has seen an underrepresentation of certain groups, especially those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities. That’s why, as part of our Health Inequalities Pledge, we are dedicated to working with the UK research community to strengthen patient inclusion in clinical research. By partnering with Our Future Health UK, who are committed to building a resource that truly reflects the UK population, we are not just anticipating a future of healthcare that is equitable and representative; we are actively creating it. #WhereScienceMeetsHope #NovartisOK

Healthcare is about more than just medicine, which is why we’re focused on working with others across the sector to find new ways of improving and extending people’s lives. Partnering with Our Future Health UK, the UK’s largest ever health research programme, allows us to bring our expertise, knowledge and support to this world-leading resource for preventing, detecting and treating diseases. Currently, diseases are too often only identified and dealt with when symptoms begin to show. Striving to improve the nation’s health by proactively identifying individuals at highest risk and introducing effective solutions that will improve their future health state is our goal. Together, let's build a healthier future. #NovartisOK

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare but debilitating genetic condition that affects at least one newborn baby every five days in the UK.   We recently hosted an exhibition in the Houses of Parliament to emphasise the importance of SMA being added to the UK newborn screening programme as soon as possible.    We were pleased to have the support of Peter Dowd MP, Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Health, who opened the exhibition, and also heard from Giles Lomax, CEO of Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK and our own Michael Oliver, General Manager of Gene Therapies & Rare Diseases for the Northern European Cluster, on why time is of the essence.    The longer it takes for SMA screening to be implemented, the greater the number of babies who will face barriers to diagnosis and treatment, ultimately leading to devastating outcomes for them and their families.   To find out more, visit https://lnkd.in/eznXsf9R     #NovartisOK #EveryMomentMatters

We are stronger together – not just in the UK and Ireland but across the globe, ensuring the magic of what we do reaches far and wide. This message from our newly appointed President of International, Patrick Horber, M.D., echoed loud and clear for the Novartis UK and Novartis Ireland teams when we welcomed him to our London hub last week. First impressions do matter, and we were eager to showcase our team’s commitment to bringing innovative medicines to as many patients as possible. Patrick, in turn, made quite an impression with his genuine curiosity and bold ambition for the UK, highlighting its untapped potential in life sciences. We were reminded that, indeed, we are stronger when we work together. As a parting gift, we couldn’t compete with Swiss chocolate, so we sent Patrick and his team off with a sixpack of Tayto crisps and tea and biscuits. The question now: did our snacks make it to Switzerland? Tune in for the highlights of the day in the video below: #WhereScienceMeetsHope #NovartisOK Marie-Andrée Gamache, Caitriona Walsh, Judith Love, Mukul Mehta, Rahul S., Haseeb Ahmad, Romain Voide

Imagine the incredible transformation when patients and hospitals join forces. In just five years, over 140 breast cancer services in UK hospitals have united with patients to develop their Service Pledge. The result? An incredible 400+ enhancements in care for both primary and secondary breast cancer patients. We couldn’t be more proud to become joint sponsors of Breast Cancer Now’s Service Pledge for 2023 - 2024. At the core of transforming UK breast cancer services, Breast Cancer Now is playing a pivotal role in harnessing valuable feedback from patients and staff to boost breast care services to new heights. Partnerships are the foundation of our work, and vital to our mission to improve and extend lives. Together, let's continue to make a difference. #NovartisOK
