Updates

  • Following the loss of her son in the Manchester Arena terrorism attack in 2017, Figen Murray OBE has channelled her grief into a relentless campaign for public safety and the prevention of future threats.    One of her significant initiatives is for Martyn’s Law to be passed through parliament—a crucial step towards enhancing security measures and safeguarding in public spaces. Figen's determination is a profound statement of her courage and unwavering spirit.   On May 7, Figen and her husband Stuart start the next part of their campaign. They are walking from Manchester to London to raise awareness and promote change. The City of London Crime Prevention Association stands in solidarity with them, offering their support and encouragement every step of the way.   The community rallying behind Figen and Stuart is a reminder of the power of unity and partnership. By walking alongside them, people from all walks of life are not only showing their support for the cause but also honouring the memory of those who have been affected by senseless acts of violence.   As Figen and Stuart set out on this challenging path, we send them our warmest wishes for favourable weather conditions and an outpouring of support. Their dedication and perseverance inspire us to stand for what is right and work towards a safer, more secure future for everyone.   Our thoughts and well-wishes are with Figen, Stuart, and all those who continue to fight for a world free from the threat of terrorism.   Don Randall MBE Chair, City of London Crime Prevention Association

This week we’re thrilled to share that our Safe Haven scheme has four new City of London Corporation locations - Artizan Library, Shoe Lane Library, Portsoken Community Centre, and Golden Lane Community Centre launching on Monday! Each location now has Safe Haven stickers in their windows and doors to inform people, city workers, visitors, and residents that they are a safe location where they can receive information, a place to sit, a friendly face, receive assistance with police intervention, or even free Wi-Fi and water if they need it.  Safe Havens play a crucial role in tackling violence against women and girls by providing immediate support, access to resources like national helplines and support services while creating a safe environment for those affected.  Expanding the Safe Havens scheme allows us to provide a place of temporary refuge for as many women and girls who may feel vulnerable or in need of help.  Safe Havens are part of wider projects, bringing together key partnerships such as Our Safer City to help prevent violence against women and girls across the City of London. To see the Safe Havens currently operating in the City, download the Safe Haven App on iOS or Android.   If you wish to join the Safe Haven scheme, or for more information you can visit our website on https://lnkd.in/eUTHVeXG Adam Ratcliffe Lilly Prior Hannah Wadey Eren Bessim

  • The City of London Crime Prevention Association (CoLCPA) is encouraging London-based businesses to engage with the BE LADS Campaign to help educate men on the role they can play in tackling violence against women and girls. Launched in the wake of the tragic case of Sarah Everard case, “BE LADS” is an acronym for advice men and boys can follow to help women and girls feel safer when walking alone. The campaign raises awareness of issues surrounding women’s safety – including sexual assault – without vilifying men or victimising women, and has been adopted by law enforcement, schools, community groups and corporate organisations across the UK, including the Chelsea FC Foundation and Royal British Legion. CoLCPA Chairman, Don Randall MBE, said combatting violence against women and girls is a priority for the organisation: “We want to see the City of London become a place where everyone, whether they are residents, workers, or visitors, feels safe. We cannot ignore that crimes such as sexual assault and domestic abuse disproportionately affect women, so we are unapologetically focusing our initial efforts on protecting women.  “Men have a fundamental role to play in improving safety for women, and the BE LADS Campaign is a highly effective initiative to give practical advice to men who want to help. BE LADS adds great value, support, and a fresh dimension to our various consortium activities to prevent violence against women. I hope to see many City of London organisations engage with BE LADS.” Read more on the CoLCPA website: https://lnkd.in/eGCndfft To find out more email info@belads.co.uk
