In the Type 31 Programme and beyond, we are focused on doing everything we can to ensure a safe working environment. The health and the safety of our people is our number one priority across Babcock. This week, we hear from Michael, Safe Systems of Work Manager. He looks after confined spaces, any health and safety risks and Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV), which ensures that the air around welding and cutting jobs is clean. We asked Michael about an achievement that he is particularly proud of. He said: “I’m proud to have established a Local Exhaust Ventilation team. The team identify what we can improve, as well as creating documentation to ensure our workers are safe and our work is efficient. Working on inspiring projects with a supportive team every day is one of the highlights of my job.” Babcock is creating more than 1,000 new jobs at our large-scale, advanced manufacturing and shipbuilding facility in Rosyth. We’ve been awarded a new contract with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) to continue as the charity’s aviation partner for the next 10 years, operating MAAC’s fleet of helicopters as well as providing ground support, engineering and pilots. MAAC is trusted by communities across the Midlands to provide hospital level emergency care to those who need it most. As part of the contract, we’ll provide helicopter upgrades and introduce increased capabilities, including enhanced night flying operations, that will enable the charity to support patients requiring the most critical care. We’ve been by MAAC’s side since the charity started operating over 33 years ago, responding to over 75,000 lifesaving missions, and we look forward to continuing to ensure MAAC remain mission ready to deliver this critical service. We recently welcomed students from United States National Defense University (NDU) to our operations at the Ministry of Defence, Donnington site which plays a vital role in ensuring that the British Army remain mission ready, making sure their complex vehicles and equipment are ready for action when needed. The NDU educates military and national security leaders on national strategy, so it was a pleasure to have serving US military personnel and US government employees join us for the day to understand more around how industry works closely with the military. The visitors enjoyed a tour of the facility, speaking to many of our people, and had the opportunity to ask questions about how we conduct the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of the British Army’s vehicles. Professor Steven M.Bloom Ph.D from the NDU said, “We have a keen interest in exploring ways the US Department of Defense can leverage MRO participation from foreign allies and partners operating outside of the United States, exactly like Babcock’s operations in the UK and around the world.” Adrian Smith, Babcock’s Head of Operations at Donnington said, “We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming our visitors from the NDU who showed a huge interest in how our partnering ethos drives everything that we do and delivers the right results for the British Army.” Dwight D.
