Primary Care Hubs – providing additional capacity to support primary care
You have an opportunity to be part of this exciting project of practitioner-led minor illness units throughout Cornwall, which will free up practices to focus on proactive care and prevention.
The hubs will provide additional appointments for people who present on the day with minor illness symptoms. Practices can direct some of their patients to attend the hubs against set criteria.
You will be a confident practitioner who will be comfortable to work under your own autonomy and, you will not be expected to work outside of your competency. Less experienced individuals will be paired with others more experienced or GP’s. We understand this work may be a little out of staff’s usual frameworks, however it is a really exciting opportunity to change how we deliver care to people in Cornwall and to make primary care a sustainable and happy place to work for future long-term careers.
About you and the opportunity
You will be a registered practitioner (with a minimum of 3 years’ experience of minor illness, an advanced practitioner or a GP depending on experience). These roles are being offered as a short-term portfolio opportunity in addition to your existing working hours. It is essential that you are able and comfortable to work autonomously, although clinical oversight will be available either on site or remotely.

To enable us to rapidly recruit you, we have created a Passport to Employment and Employer Waiver form, this form will be sent to you following an expression of interest. You need to ask your current employer to complete this form. By doing so, your employer is endorsing your suitability for this role and is acknowledging that you are picking up additional hours.
You will be seeing and treating/advising patients which have been referred to the Primary Care Hub against a set minor illness criteria triaged by their registered practice. The appointments will be 15 mins per practitioner, 10 mins per GP.
For ease of co-ordination of staff, Kernow Health CIC will manage the rota for each Primary Care Hub and will be paying for your hours worked.
Your hourly rate will be dependent on experience and competency level, and whether the shift is outside of normal general practice hours.
GP rate: £225 per face-to-face session to reflect the nature of the work, i.e. minor illness post-triaged work. Remote clinical oversight sessions will be at a reduced rate.
Practitioner rate: £19.10 – £29.33 per hour.
You will submit a timesheet for the hours worked to the Rota co-ordinator on or at the end of the month. Timesheets submitted by the 2nd of the month will be processed and paid on the last Thursday of each month by Bacs transfer from Kernow Health CIC.
Hours of the Primary Care Hubs will be dictated by the availability of staff but we envisage they will be open for some of the hours (staff depending) between 9.30am – 5pm.
It is likely that you will be paired with another practitioner on shift, this will be based on your level of experience. For example, Band 6 staff will be paired with Band 8 or a GP, whereas a Band 7 is likely to be paired with Band 7 or 8.
There will also be a receptionist on site and clinical oversight from either a GP on the shift or available remotely.
Shifts will be determined by the availability of staff and pairings. Ideally we would want a minimum of 4 hours availability for any one shift.
You can offer as little as one shift to this service.
