On the 9th June 2017 my husband Shawn died of kidney cancer. He was cared for by St Wilfrid’s Hospice in his final days.

2022 marked the fifth anniversary of his death. In that time, I’ve raised almost £5,000 for the hospice.

The number five has been significant this year. This number is said to symbolise motivation, determination, courage, positive choices and life lessons learnt, and these are all characteristics I’ve adopted through my bereavement. I’ve learnt how to see the light amongst the darkness of grief, and I’ve been committed to sharing my experiences with others, while raising money for St Wilfrid’s.

I’ll be celebrating my 51st birthday on the 5th April 2023. In the five-day lead up to this date I’m planning to do five sunrise walks along Eastbourne seafront. I will be starting each walk at 5.55am, in time for the sunrise,

as it’s been the ‘sunshine moments’ that have got me through my darkest days. Shawn never got to celebrate his 50th birthday, so I want to end my 50th year doing something meaningful.

Whether it’s 5p, £5 or even £50, I hope you can help me reach my goal of £5,000 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

When Shawn was admitted to the hospice’s Inpatient Unit it felt like a weight had been lifted off our shoulders. We could finally spend time as a family without being restricted by visiting times. The money raised will make sure other patients and families are able to receive this same high level of tailored care and support.

Thank you.
