Frequently asked questions

Not all STIs have symptoms so it is recommended that you get tested every year or if you change partner. Symptoms can develop within a few days or weeks, but sometimes they do not appear until months or even years later.

Often there are few or no symptoms and you may not know you have an STI.

If you're under 16, you can still get confidential contraceptive and other sexual health services including free condoms. We have additional services for young people under 25 years of age.

When you go to a sexual health clinic, you will be asked for your name and some contact details. You do not have to give your real name if you do not want to. If you do, it will be kept confidential. However, if you decide to use a false name you will need to remember it the next time you use one of the sexual health services.

Sexual health services are provided in a confidential way and your details will never be disclosed to anyone else. The exception to this is if we feel there is a safeguarding concern, but we will always discuss this with you before we share any information.

Anyone can use free NHS Sexual Health Services. In Surrey, you can access services either by visiting a clinic or by ordering an online home screening kit. Either way you choose, the service will be completely free, confidential and non-judgemental.
