A new football campaign has been launched to raise awareness of mental health in partnership with Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust’s Now We’re Talking campaign and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Football Associations.

The #KickofftheConvo campaign, is launching to coincide with the start of the 2022 World Cup, is all about highlighting the importance of conversations about mental health both on and off the football pitch.

Grassroots football teams across Herefordshire and Worcestershire will be encouraged to take care of their mental health as much as they do their physical health, and to engage with mental health support and resources available to them when needed.

Throughout the World Cup, the campaign will be shared digitally across social media platforms and amongst grassroots teams and clubs across both counties. A new podcast will also be launched to focus on talking about mental health in sport including guests from local sporting teams and organisations.

Scott Russell, Football Development Officer at Herefordshire FA said: “This an incredibly important subject to talk about and make more people aware that there are organisations who can help those who may have poor mental health. Football is a sport that can bring people together from all walks of life and that is why it was an easy decision to partner up with Worcestershire FA and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, promoting the good things that are happening within mental health that perhaps people aren’t aware of.

We want to remove the negative stigma that can follow mental health and it’s well known that playing sport can not only improve physical wellbeing but also improve mental wellbeing. #KickofftheConvo is a great campaign to engage with leagues, clubs, coaches, players, family, friends… anyone! Letting people who need help to know that they are not alone in the world and in life it’s about thriving and not just simply surviving! Together we aim to provide links, contacts and direction for those wanting help and to aid them on their personal journey to improve their mental health overall.”
