Teaching about mental wellbeing
Practical materials for primary and secondary schools to use to train staff about teaching mental wellbeing.
Applies to England
This training module supports the physical health and mental wellbeing section of the statutory relationships, sex and health education curriculum. This is the first of a series of 14 modules to support schools to implement the new curriculum.
We have developed this mental wellbeing teacher training module to help subject leads and teachers understand what they should teach, as well as improving their confidence in delivering mental wellbeing as part of the new curriculum.
The new curriculum becomes statutory in September 2020 but the content in this module may be useful for teachers who are currently working with pupils, either face-to-face or remotely, to support them to maintain good mental health and address issues before they escalate.
How to use this training module
We have designed this module to help subject leads to train teachers who will be teaching mental wellbeing.
The module contains key knowledge and facts to help teachers understand what they must teach.
These slides should be adapted to suit individual school context. This can include adding your own videos and resources to make your teaching training sessions more visual and interactive.
Other resources
To support teachers to deliver sessions on mental wellbeing, the Tenax Schools Trust has produced a series of short filmed recordings of lessons. There are 3 videos for primary schools and 3 videos for secondary schools. Each video is about 10 minutes long and illustrates how to turn the mental wellbeing training into teaching.
You can find advice on supporting pupils whose mental health problems manifest themselves in behaviour in mental health and behaviour in schools.
Supporting mental health in schools and colleges contains case studies on activities to support pupils’ mental health and wellbeing.
Support during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic
Although this training module is not specifically about COVID-19, this training may help staff leading work in schools to manage the impact of the pandemic on pupil wellbeing and mental health.
Targeted support is available from NHS mental health trusts who have established a 24/7 crisis helpline.
MindEd have produced a Coronavirus Resilience Hub to support staff to manage their mental health and wellbeing.
The Anna Freud Centre have produced advice for professionals working with children and young people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
