This session provides an introduction to eating disorders and disordered eating in adults, aiming to increase awareness and understanding.

Delivered by a trainer with lived experience of eating disorders, it provides insight into the challenges associated with recovery and guidance on how to make sense of disordered eating and it’s function for the individual. The session is aimed broadly at anyone with an interest in learning more about these issues.

The following topics are included in the session:

• Grounding eating disorders in fact: addressing myths and misconceptions

• The spectrum of eating behavior and eating disorder diagnoses.

• Understanding the function of an eating disorder

• Weight stigma and its impact

• Early intervention and barriers to accessing support

• Person-centered care and support: what you can do to help

Trainer bio – Katharine Lazenby

Katharine Lazenby is mental health expert by experience, drawing on her lived experience of eating disorders, psychiatric treatment and hospitalization. She is currently a Project Manager at East London NHS Foundation Trust but has extensive experience as a mental health trainer within the public sector, educator and public speaker. As a visiting scholar at London Southbank University, she lectures on the lived experience of eating disorders and psychologically informed environments. She sits on the board of directors for the Design in Mental Health Network and has spoken at a number of national conferences about her lived experience of mental health care and recovery. She is passionate about the power and importance of centering lived experience in mental health education.
