A local bowls club is helping to light the way to a greener future after becoming the latest recipients of a Green Energy Grant from Dover District Council. Aylesham and Snowdown Welfare Bowls Club received a grant for £858 to replace fluorescent fittings with LED lights at the club.

Aylesham and Snowdown Welfare Bowls Club has a range of social facilities, as well as a full programme of sporting events. The club has outdoor bowls and facilities for long mat and short mat indoor bowling, and a specially designed wheelchair so that people with disabilities can play bowls.

DDC continues to promote a range of funding opportunities to help residents and businesses become more energy efficient. DDC aims to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030 at the latest and aspires for the district to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Small businesses (up to 50 employees) in the Dover district can apply for a Green Energy Grant for up to 50% of their costs, up to £10,000. The aim of the grant is to help small businesses save carbon and become more energy efficient.

Terrence Terry, the Chairman of the club said: “We are delighted to be able to replace the fluorescent fittings with LED lights, to improve the lighting and make us greener going forward.  We’d like to say a big thank you to Dover District Council for helping us with this grant.”

Cllr Chris Vinson, DDC Cabinet Member for Climate Change, said: “We are very pleased to be able to help the Aylesham and Snowdown Welfare Bowls Club to put in new low-energy LED lights. This Green Energy Grant will help them reduce their carbon footprint as well as their energy bills. And if, like me, you’ve not tried bowls before then head down to your local club and try it out – it’s great fun!”
