TWO Southampton school children have spoken of their excitement after meeting Queen Camilla.

Two pupils from Mason Moore Primary School were invited to meet the Queen Consort at the National Literacy Trust event in Bristol on Thursday.

Charlie, eight, and Mia, nine, attended with headteacher Daniel Constable-Phelps and deputy headteacher Anna Brooks.

The Helvellyn Road school was one of ten from across the UK selected to receive funding from the charity to build a new library within the school.

Mason Moor will receive £10,000 to create an innovative space to promote books and reading.

The children met Queen Camilla who asked them about their ideas as well as how early they'd had to wake up to get to Bristol.

Mia, who is in Year 5, said: “My family said that I’d be the only person to ever meet a member of the Royal Family – and the first person I meet is the new Queen.”

Charlie was very excited – he hadn’t been told that he would be meeting the Royal Family as the security around the event was extremely confidential.

When told at Southampton Central station, he said: “I cannot believe it – I knew there would be famous people but I didn’t expect this.”

Mr Constable-Phelps said: "This year, Mason Moor have been chosen to receive a state-of-the-art flagship library. This means that our space will be transformed to become an exciting library that is fit for a modern world of reading.

"As executive headteacher, it is paramount to me that our young people are equipped with secure reading skills that enable them to be employable – but more importantly – that our school has a library stocked with books that provide the escapism needed from difficult lives outside of the classroom.

"Meeting Her Majesty Queen Camilla, I was struck by how interested she was in our children and their school.

"She came over to the table, shook my hand and proceeded to ask our children about Mason Moor Primary School.

"She asked them what they hoped their new library would look like and why it was needed.

"She asked school leaders about provision within Millbrook for reading for adults and expressed her gratitude for having travelled so far."
