Radiographers across north east London (NEL) are set to benefit from fantastic development opportunities with the launch of the North East London Imaging Academy, in our efforts to recruit, upskill and retain the best staff for our patients.

The collaborative project will be based at King George Hospital (KGH), where student radiographers from our Trust, Barts Health, and Homerton will strengthen their skills in MRI, CT, and Plain Film imaging.

The Imaging Academy, which is funded by Health Education England and NHS England and Improvement, is a visible demonstration that NEL is a great place to work for radiographers, as we continue to improve our workforce and facilities.

Speaking at the North East London Imaging Academy launch event on 7 December, Rakhee Jagatia, Ultrasound Lead at our Trust and Chair of the Education Training and Development Group, said: “The NEL Imaging Academy will provide a safe environment for our student radiographers to study, learn and develop.

“It will also allow us to upskill our current clinical workforce and will enhance the use of simulator software and improve our relationship with other trusts across NEL, as we work together to provide crucial training.”

The Academy hub at KGH is equipped with an MRI simulator and phantoms, allowing trainees to practice on dummies, and the first semester will see six students complete a variety of training courses, while being supported by expert Practice Educators. It will also promote the development of non-technical skills like communication, leadership, and teamwork.

Our Chief Executive Matthew Trainer said: “The Academy is a fantastic initiative and KGH is a great location for the hub. It’s vital that we give trainee and experienced radiographers the best equipment and opportunities to develop, so they can enjoy their job and continue to provide an excellent service to our patients.

“It’s been a tough couple of years for radiologists and the team have worked extremely hard to reduce waiting lists. Radiology services at our Trust have a bright future, with more MRI and CT machines and a proposed diagnostic centre at Barking Community Hospital.”
