This four-day in depth training on eating disorders is designed to widen knowledge and skills required for staff to provide optimal evidence-based treatment to children and young people (CYP) with eating disorders (ED).

This training is funded by NHS England (Workforce, Training & Education Directorate) and delivered through Central North West London (CNWL) NHS Foundation Trust. This training is free to participants as is funded by NHS England.

Who is the training for?

The training is designed for practitioners working within CYP mental health or paediatric services, caring for CYP with eating disorders and their families/carers.  The training focuses on community care, including medical stabilisation, rather than inpatient psychiatric care. Course materials are designed for practitioners new to working within eating disorders settings, but may also be valuable for professional development for more experienced CYP eating disorders practitioners.

Training dates

Day 1: Wednesday 27 March 2024, delivered online.

Days 2 & 3: 8th-9th May 2024, delivered in person at the Crown Plaza, Nottingham.

Day 4: 12 June 2024, delivered online.

Course aims and objectives.

To equip CYP-ED team members with basic knowledge and skills needed to provide an expert eating disorders service and to support strong team development.

.

To create a consistent treatment context in which empirically supported (NICE concordant) treatments can be delivered.

.

To support the development of a team philosophy that encourages:

.

  • ongoing learning and development as a team
  • a culture of collaboration with young people and families
  • the incorporation of routine measurement of outcomes into team clinical practice
  • a shared philosophy of treatment that incorporates knowledge of current best evidence about treatment effectiveness.

Over the four-day training, participants will learn:

The nature of eating disorders– including biology, epidemiology and risk factors

.

Risk assessment, management, and consent – including biology of starvation & nutrition management, family engagement.

.

Working as a specialist eating disorders team - including evidence base, NICE guidelines, and treatment planning

.

Treatment: participation, collaboration, and teamwork - including legislation, young people’s and parents’ views on care, goal setting and outcome monitoring

.

Learning objectives for the course are to:

Know what is, and what is not, an eating disorder and the clinical characteristics associated with specific eating disorder diagnoses.

.

Be able to describe the role of psychosocial factors in the development of eating disorders.

.

Understand the role of families in treatment for CYP.

.

Recognise the importance of early intervention.

.

Develop skills in assessing and managing physical health risks associated with eating disorders

.

Understand the effective elements of community multidisciplinary treatment services.

.

Incorporate people with lived experience into service development.

.

Know the evidence base for effective treatment.

.

Apply the principles of goal-directed outcome measurement.

.

Discuss the role of other services and agencies (e.g., GPs, inpatient settings, schools) in ongoing care.
