Report an e-scooter incident

You should report e-scooter incidents to the company that operates them, and these operators differ depending on where an incident takes place.

It is illegal to use a privately owned e-scooter on any road, path or bridleway. Only government scheme rental e-scooters can be used on the road.

Privately owned e-scooters

E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles and they cannot be insured. Therefore, if you are caught riding one on a road, pavement or in any public place, you could be prosecuted and have your e-scooter seized.

Privately owned e-scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission.

Rental e-scooters

If you rent an e-scooter through a government scheme, you will be insured when you register. You must:

  • be at least 16 years old in Bridgwater, or over 18 in all other areas
  • hold a valid driving licence

It is illegal to:

  • ride on the payment
  • use a mobile device while riding
  • ride through red lights
  • drink drive

If you allow your children to ride an e-scooter, you can be prosecuted.
