Key statistics

In December quarter 2023, there were 655,400 tourism jobs. This was:

  • 4,800 (-0.7%) less jobs than September quarter 2023
  • 8,000 (1.2%) more jobs than December quarter 2022
  • 94,600 (-12.6%) less jobs than December quarter 2019, prior to COVID-19 pandemic
  • 1 in 24 (4.2%) filled jobs in the economy

During this quarter, industries with the largest quarterly changes were:

  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: decrease of 15,200 jobs (-6.8%)
  • education and training: increase of 8,300 jobs (17.6%)
  • retail trade: increase of 4,400 jobs (4.2%)

Comparing December quarter 2022 with December quarter 2023, industries with the largest changes were:

  • education and training: increase of 23,500 jobs (73.4%)
  • accommodation: decrease of 15,900 jobs (-17.2%)
  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: decrease of 7,800 jobs (-3.6%)
