Runcorn Urgent Treatment Centre is open 8am to 9pm, seven days a week.
The centre brings a range of benefits to patients including a single point of access to urgent care services, reducing the need for some patients to travel to A&E.
There is also a range of diagnostic facilities including an x-ray department with extended opening hours and short-term observation bays.
To access the service local residents can'walk-in' during the opening hours, please be aware of capacity in the evening, which may impact on assessment times. Therefore please allow plenty of time before closing to be assessed.
The centre also provides appointment slots for patients who contact NHS 111 first.
Contacting NHS 111 enables residents to access expert health advice and clinical assessment. Depending on the individual needs of patients, NHS 111 can book time slots for patients at GP surgeries, NHS Runcorn Urgent Treatment Centre, NHS Widnes Urgent Treatment Centre and the emergency department at Warrington Hospital, if appropriate.
Patients with a booked face-to-face arrival time slot will benefit from reduced waiting times, where clinical urgency permits, and support NHS services to maintain social distancing in waiting areas.
Residents who are registered with a local GP practice can continue to contact their surgery online or via phone as usual.
Anyone with a life-threatening emergency should call 999 immediately.

The centre is kite marked by North West Ambulance service, which means that if you call an ambulance but your condition is not life threatening, you may be taken to the UCC for treatment rather than to a local Accident and Emergency department.
On arrival you will be initially assessed to prioritise the urgency of your care. You will be seen by a Doctor or Clinical Nurse Practitioner to complete your care.
Some people will be monitored in the observation bays before deciding on an appropriate care plan. This may, for example, involve treatment with intravenous (through a vein) medication prescribed in the centre and further tests, also whilst in the centre.

Who can access the service? - Anyone can use this service, no appointment is neededbut can be arranged by contacting NHS 111.
What? - Any illness that needs urgent attention, injury or fractures.
The Urgent Care Centre is staffed by a team of
highly trained nurses with support from doctors and GPs.
Runcorn Urgent Treatment Centre operates opening hours of 8am to 9pm, 7-days week but please arrive before 8pm to allow time to be seen before closing.
- You can be seen at the Urgent Treatment Centre for a wide range of minor illnesses and injuries
- Your GP is still the best person to see you if you are living with a long-term condition.
- Widnes Urgent Treatment Centre remains open 8am – 9pm, 7-days week.
- If you believe you have symptoms of Covid-19 (a new dry, persistent cough and/or high temperature) please do not come to the Urgent Treatment Centre, hospital, your GP or contact NHS111 unless you become poorly. As with all emergency departments, patients are seen in a priority manner. The more urgent the condition is, the faster you are seen.
We aim to initially assess more than 95% of our patients in less than 15 minutes and aim to provide treatment and a decision on your care within a maximum of four hours from your arrival.
Some patients are offered treatment and further monitoring in the unit.

We ask that patients coming in the evening to be mindful of capacity, which may impact on assessments before closing time, 8pm.

Your GP is your first point of contact for non-emergency illnesses which you can’t treat yourself, and practices can offer same day appointments if necessary.

When the surgery is closed, you can still see a local GP with the GP out-of-hours service - just call 111 and you will be transferred to an adviser.

Your local pharmacy can offer free, confidential advice on a range of health issues and you don’t need an appointment.

What conditions can be treated at the Urgent Care Centre?
What do we treat?
- Minor cuts or wounds
- Sore throats
- Bites or stings
- Rashes and allergic reactions
- Prescribed medication (subject to assessment)
- Minor burns and scalds
- Coughs and colds
- Muscle or joint injuries (eg. sprains and strains)
- Earache
- Eye injuries and infections
- Emergency contraception
Once assessed you will receive treatment or, if deemed appropriate, be referred to another service.
We do not treat Covid- 19 postive patients, if you test positive please contact NHS 111 or your GP for advice.
Services for children
NHS Runcorn Urgent Care Centre has specialist paediatric nurses who have expertise in treating Children along with special paediatric observation suites.
There is also a Doctor on staff who is able to treat paediatric illnesses and injuries as appropriate.
X-ray
If you require an x-ray during your visit to the UCC, you can now receive this directly from the centre. X-ray is open from 8am – 9pm, Seven days a week.
What conditions cannot be treated at the centre?
Conditions that Urgent Care Centres cannot treat include:
- Cardiac chest paint
- Severe difficulty in breathing
- Head injuries with a loss of consciousness
- Head injuries under 1 years old
- Strokes
- Sudden loss of vision
- Repeat prescriptions
- Chronic conditions
- Routine pregnancy care
- gynaecological problems
- drug overdose
- alcohol related problems
- mental health problems
- health conditions that would normally be treated by your GP or hospital.
During the 30 minutes before closing, patients will be assessed but might be referred to their GP, Out of Hours GP or the A&E at Warrington Hospital or Whiston Hospital, depending on what is closer for you.

North West Boroughs Mental Health assessment team provides specialist assessment, advice for adults with moderate to severe symptoms of mental illness such as severe depression and anxiety, as well as conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
The Warrington and Halton team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; you will need to be registered with a GP in the town where you live to be able to access this service because it is your GP who will need to refer you to the assessment team. If your symptoms are moderate/severe and you cannot talk to your GP you can call the assessment service direct.
