WORKERS must join forces across borders to fight attacks on hard-fought rights that are intensifying during the coronavirus pandemic, trade unionists heard yesterday.
National Education Union (NEU) joint general secretary Kevin Courtney warned delegates at the TUC Congress that millions of vulnerable workers have already been plunged into destitution across the globe.
Speaking in support of the general council’s statement on “a global recovery for working people,” Mr Courtney said that the pandemic had revealed the flaws and exploitation in global markets and called for trade unions to be represented in international trade talks.
The TUC’s motion demanded a “new social contract between business, governments and trade unions,” calling for unions to take a seat within the World Trade Organisation.
Mr Courtney said: “We must demand co-ordinated action from the international community to address these problems because only with massive international assistance will workers in the global south be able to get through.”
