WFHP Climate Declaration

  • We recognise that the climate and ecological emergency is a health emergency
  • We recognise that the health impacts of climate change are unfairly distributed and exacerbate existing health inequalities
  • We will take action to reduce the severe risks to public and global health by reducing greenhouse gas emissions we control directly to zero as soon as possible (aiming for an 80% reduction by 2028-2032) and at the latest by 2040. For emissions we can influence we will reach net zero by 2045 (aiming for an 80% reduction by 2036-2039)
  • We will communicate the importance of these threats to health to our colleagues, decision makers and the public
  • We will call on our partner organisations to tell the truth, respond fairly and act in keeping with the urgency of the threat

Net Zero Carbon General Practice: what will it look like, how will we get there?

See the NHS’s and primary Care’s Carbon Footprint

In the sidebar is a list of the different factors which contribute to the NHS’s carbon footprint. Along the top is a list of various parts on the NHS- ambulance service, primary care, acute sector etc. See the red arrow highlighting primary care and follow the blobs vertically down to see how each of the factors contributes to our carbon footprint. The bigger the blob the more important- see medicines which is by far our biggest in primary care and a large component of this is MDI inhalers.

Carbon Literacy Training: Net Zero in Primary Care

Carbon literacy is an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.  The more of us who know about this the better. There are many sources of information but the following links are particularly helpful.

MDI Inhaler Prescribing

MDI inhaler prescribing accounts for a substantial part of primary care’s carbon footprint. The current ratio of MDI:DPI in our area is approximately 60:40. In Sweden it is 10:90 so clearly it is achievable to reduce MDI prescribing very significantly without affecting patient safety. 30% of an MDI inhaler’s carbon footprint comes from disposal in landfill so returning inhalers to the chemist for appropriate disposal either by incineration or preferably recycling is essential (but don’t make a special journey in your car!)

Air Quality

Did you know air pollution causes 40,000 deaths per year in the uk. That’s nearly as many as breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined and yet strangely we do not routinely have conversations with our patients about air quality.

There are educational resources below as well as patient information -some of these will be available to send to patients via accurx
