BAGS for strife
'BAGS for strife' is a charity set up by people who have lost loved ones to suicide. BAGS is an acronym for the four overriding emotions experienced in suicide-related grief - Blame, Anger, Guilt and Sadness. The charity provides practical and emotional support for those who may need it.

Responding to suicide risk in the workplace - guidance for line managers has been created by the CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development.

All on Board is a partnership between Network Rail and the NHS which aims to lead in the delivery of a service that works within communities and with a wide range of partners to reduce suicide and promote help seeking before a person reaches crisis. It works in communities to encourage recognition of the signs of poor mental health and contributing risk factors, improve confidence to intervene and to promote and signpost to local and national services that can support those who are experiencing poor mental health both at stations and in the wider community.

Management of Self-Harm in the Emergency Department | The University of Manchester - This free resource has been designed to help understand more about why people self-harm and how to help people who present to hospital emergency departments after self-harm. It has been developed by researchers at the Manchester Self-Harm (MaSH) Project, which is part of the Centre for Suicide Prevention, a leading UK centre for research into suicidal behaviour based at The University of Manchester.

NCISH - National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Safety in Mental Health - has produced a new online resource to help staff working in mental health services to understnad more about what it means to be given a diagnosis of personality disorder and how to help people who present to services with the diagnosis: Safer care for patients given a diagnosis of personality disorder: a learning resource.

Working together to prevent suicide in the NHS workforce: a national suicide prevention toolkit for England. This is aimed at helping NHS organisations reduce the risk of suicide in the workforce. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) has created a resource in response to a suicide in a care home - to offer further inforamtion and best practice around prevention of suicide, intervention with those at risk and action to take following a suicide (postvention): Promoting Emotional Health and Wellbeing and Preventing Suicide: A Resource for Care Home Settings.

'Surviving Crisis: Learning from Lived Experience' is a five-episode podcast aimed at support staff working with people in mental health crisis across West Yorkshire and created by volunteers on our Suicide Prevention Coproduction Project, who all have experiences of suicidal crisis. The series uses insights from frontline health and care staff who were asked in advance to share their thoughts on what they would like discussed. 

'Preventing suicide: Communication, support and follow-up' is a film created by volunteers with lived experience of being impacted by suicide which speaks directly to staff in health and care organisations about their experiences, to share good practice. The film can also be found within the interactive training guide on our training pages

 

Gambling with Lives
Gambling with Lives is a charity that raises awareness amongst gamblers, their families and friends, and health professionals of the dangerous effects of gambling on mental health, and the high suicide risk. It also supports families who have been bereaved by gambling-related suicides.

Self-harm LGB study
A study - Suicidal thoughts, suicide attempt and non-suicidal self-harm amongst lesbian, gay and bisexual adults cmopared with heterosexual adults: analysis of data from two nationally representative household surveys - was published in the Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology journal in 2023. 
It aims to compare differences in suicidality and self-harm between specific lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) groups and investigate whether minority stress factors might contribute. It found specific LBG groups are at elevated risk of suicidal thoughts and non-suicidal self-harm with a possible contribution of lifetime bullying and homophobic discrimination.

Researchers in the US have conducted the first population-based study of suicide risk in people with autism. Researchers at the Univeristy of Utah Health carried out a 20-year retrospective study which found that for individuals with autism, particularly females, the risk of suicide has increased through time compared to their non-autistic peers.

Compiled by the National Autistic Society, in collaboration with Mind, the guide incoporates the views of over 1,500 autistic people and almost 1,000 family members.

The National Autistic Society has published information around a large-scale research review of suicidality in autistic people, by a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, whose research involves creating a self-harm assessment tool for autistic adults. Further guidance on the website inlucudes research and practical suggestions for assessment and prevention of suicide for autistic people

A webinar has been created of a recent presentation at the National Suicide Prevention Alliance 2023 Conference by NSPA lived experience influencer Sue Willgoss. The webinar is titled 'Linking Suicide Prevention Strategies with Autism Strategies and including the Autistic community: A lived experience perspective'. 

Ethnic Minority Groups’ Experiences of Suicide Bereavement: A Qualitative Exploratory Study - This is the first study in the UK to engage with ethnic minority groups and provide a preliminary understanding of their experiences and needs in relation to suicide bereavement.

We Need To Talk 'Voices From The South Asian Community' - We Need To Talk ‘Voices from the South Asian Community’ are a series of films and audio tools produced by Community Link’s CLEAR’s Men’s talk Digital and Anti Stigma Kirklees – featuring members of the local South Asian Community talking about mental health.

Sharing Voices, the Bradford-based community mental health organisation, has published a report: Culturally-competent suicide prevention in South Asian communities. It aims to overcome gaps in knowledge, understanding and evidence base in relation to suicide prevention for BAME communities. 

A report called 'Tackling Suicide Inequalities in Gypsy and Traveller communities' has been created by Friends, Families and Travellers (FFT), in collaboration with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID). It aims to provide guidance for public health and healthcare professionals on how to ensure the communities are included within suicide prevention planning and support.
 

Check-In Campaign

The Check-In campaign aims to prevent staff suicide and promote a wellbeing culture by normalising the conversation around suicide and mental health as well as providing training, resources and signposting for support.

Samaritans Campaigns

The Samaritans run a number of suicide prevention campaigns including Small Talk Saves Lives.

Safer Public Space

The Safer Public Spaces Network is a place for people to come together to progress issues of suicide in public space. By joining together internationally and across different sectors, we will advance the thinking, research, and ways in which we create better public spaces

The Ask, Assist, Act framework will help you know what to say and do if you are supporting someone who you think may be suicidal.

Information is available from the Samaritans about how to support someone who is suicidal.

StayingSafe.net provides vital ‘Safety Plan' guidance tools jointly funded by NHS England, with easy to print / online templates and guidance video tutorials purposefully designed to help people through the process of writing their own Safety Plan to build hope, identify actions and strategies to resist suicidal thoughts and develop positive ways to cope with stress and emotional distress.

Samaritans works with the Ministry of Defence and other charities to support serving personnel in the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families.

SSAFA (The Armed Forces Charity)
The SSAFA is ready to help all servicemen and women, veterans and their families, with any mental or emotional health concerns. This includes Bereaved Support Group and Military Families Affected by Suicide.
