What are Functional Skills?

Functional Skills are fundamental skills people need for their working lives and are a widely accepted alternative to GCSEs.

Functional Skills in Maths and English qualifications are FREE to 16-29 year-olds, Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET), and who do not already have a GCSEs in these subjects or higher than a Level 1 in Functional Skills.

Demonstrating your skills in Maths and English should always be something you highlight on your CV. We use them in almost every task we do, whether that’s writing a social media post, composing an email, or calculating how much we spend on groceries.

With functional skills qualifications in maths and English, you’ll be reading, writing, and communicating with more authority and efficiency.

What is a Functional Skills qualification?

Functional Skills are essential qualifications that provide students with the foundational skills they need to advance their learning and can improve your chances of finding a job.

They are generally seen as an alternative to the GCSE route, offering a vocational pathway into English and mathematics.

 

Are Functional Skills qualification easier than an GCSE?

While there are many similarities between Functional Skills qualifications and GCSEs, Functional Skills are better suited to students who prefer an alternative to traditional based learning and assessments.

Generally speaking, Functional Skills qualifications involve a more streamlined approach to learning. The courses cover more practical topics making the subjects easier to apply to real life scenarios. As a result, students tend to find them less challenging than GCSEs.
