PDSCP - Working with Children and Adolescents who display Harmful Sexual Behaviour

Outline

Working effectively with children who have engaged in harmful sexual behaviour, sexual discussions or acts that are inappropriate for their age or stage of development can be challenging, complex and emotional. This course aims to help professionals respond to and manage this behaviour, and to provide effective support to both the child(ren) and their parent(s) or carer(s). It will focus on effective assessment and intervention.

Description

This course addresses what constitutes harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) as displayed by children/young people. It will address both sexual as well as non-sexual pathways into developing HSB, to understand why some children and young people develop HSB.

The course will address the different needs of the different family members, this will address whether the child/young person has abused either within the family home or in the community.

The course will also explore the services and resources that are available, including the AIM model of assessment and intervention guidance.

Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • An improved ability to identify whether sexual behaviour is developmentally appropriate, problematic or harmful.
  • A greater understanding of the prevalence of harmful sexual behaviour.
  • A better understanding of the possible pathways to harmful sexual behaviour.
  • Greater confidence in identifying and responding to concerns of harmful sexual behaviour.
  • Greater confidence in developing robust and effective safety plans to manage harmful sexual behaviour.
  • Greater confidence in supporting non-abusing family members to respond to, and effectively manage, harmful sexual behaviour.

Audience

Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Police and any multidisciplinary workers that may work with child sexual abuse.
PLEASE NOTE: this training is not suitable for trainee social workers.
