Access to Medicine and Dentistry

Access to Medicine pathway programmes are open to young people in Year 12 who are interested in studying medicine. The programmes consist of a series of activities alongside a residential or online summer school.

Funded by NHS England, the programmes are aimed at young people who are from under-represented backgrounds, and targets areas of England that have limited outreach engagement with medical schools.

In 2024 we are running four programmes:

Edge Hill, Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester Medical Schools

The pathway programme will be open to young people in Year 12 who are interested in studying medicine. The programme will combine an online activity day with an on-campus visit to Edge Hill and will culminate in a residential summer school where you will stay at Edge Hill University and visit the other medical schools on separate days.

BrightIdeas 2024 MSC Pathway Programme

Anglia Ruskin University and Brighton and Sussex Medical School are welcoming aspiring medics, in Year 12, to apply for the BrightIdeas 2024,

MSC Pathway Programme. The BrightIdeas MSC Pathway Programme is centred around participants undertaking a research project that combines scientific literature with insights from people with lived experience of chronic conditions. Alongside completing the project, students also attend four online events and a residential summer school, where they’ll experience undergraduate level teaching, practise key clinical skills, meet doctors, patients and medical students from across the UK and receive 1:1 support with personal statement and interview preparation.

London Medicine Summer School

Queen Mary, University of London, King College London, St George’s, University of London and University College London are working together to provide an online programme to give 75 Year 12 students from across England an opportunity to find out what it is like to study medicine in London. Working with patients and student ambassadors, participants will gain a greater understanding of the realities of being a doctor and the skills needed to succeed.

The Yorkshire Medical Schools Summer School

This is a collaboration between Leeds Medical School, Hull York Medical School, Sheffield Medical School and The Royal College of Surgeons. Running from March - October 2024, the summer school will consist of monthly online activities to prepare students for applying to Medical School. Students will also take part in a week-long online summer school, including a visit to the University of Leeds Medical School for a Surgical Careers Taster Day.
