Dear Young People’s network member,

A new opportunity at the McPin Foundation has arrived. Because you are subscribed to the Young People’s Network, you are the first to hear about it! Please see below for further details:

Enhance the CAMHS Referrals Process (En-CAMHS)

What’s the Project?

This research project addresses challenges with the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) referral pathway. Around a quarter of children and young people who are referred to the service ultimately are not offered treatment through CAMHS. This is distressing for children and their families. The EnCAMHS project aims to understand what the difficulties are in making referrals to CAMHS services. The researchers want to improve the quality of referrals to CAMHS so that only children and young people who can be helped by CAMHS are referred; and so that others can be guided to receive help they need from other services.

What’s the opportunity?

This is an opportunity for young members of the public to join focus groups and discuss what the current challenges are in making referrals to CAMHS services. The groups will also discuss solutions which could support more successful referrals to CAMHS.

There will be between 5-10 young people in each focus group. The virtual focus groups for young people on the following dates:
•    Friday 21st Jan, 12:00-13:30
•    Friday 18th Feb, 16:00-17:30
•    Thursday 3rd March, 16:00-17:30

What’s required of me?

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Experience of being referred to CAMHS within the past 5 years (the referral does not have to have been accepted by CAMHS)

What will be provided?

•    Young people will be paid £50.00 for sharing their experience of the CAMHS referral process in one of the  focus groups.

You will be sent an information sheet and consent form if  you  express an interest to participate in the research project. Once you have returned a completed consent form,  you will be sent a further 3 documents:
•     A document containing the research questions  you will be asked during the focus group.
•    The ground rules of the focus group.
•     A final document containing contact information for sources of further support if the young person experiences any distress during the focus group (however the researchers  do not anticipate that this will be likely).

I’m interested! Who do I contact?

If anyone is interested or would like more information, please contact the team at:  GM.Digital@manchester.ac.uk or via Heidi.tranter@gmmh.nhs.uk

What’s the deadline to apply?

The focus groups will be held on Thursdays and Fridays from the end of January until the end of March, therefore the deadline to apply is by 5:00pm on 15th March 2022.

Best Wishes,
The Young People’s Team at McPin
