SAS Advocate

A strategic role to promote, advocate and support SAS doctor’s health and wellbeing. SAS advocate is designed to be the voice of the entire SAS workforce and Locally Employed if applicable in your NHS Trust. In this role you’ll engage with all the SAS doctors in your NHS Trust and will gather insight into their health and wellbeing. You’ll work with the local negotiating committee, senior management and have collaborative work with SAS support leads, freedom to speak up guardians and change champions.

SAS Local Negotiating Committee Representative

If you're interested in negotiating for and representing SAS clinicians in your region, then you may want to consider running for an elected position as an LNC representative. Elections are typically held biannually, and you’d actively participate in your local trust and attend up to eight meeting per year. You’ll have the opportunity to develop skills in negotiating and influencing as well as representing your SAS community.

SAS Committee

There are many ways to be involved as a committee member and the first step would be to think about where your interests lie is it at a local level in your NHS Trust, for your Royal College or within your own clinical specialty. Depending on your areas of interest you could become involved in clinical governance or audit committees, morbidity and mortality review or serious untoward incident panels. It is useful to look in your NHS trust, Royal College or Union to see what opportunities are available.

Appraiser

An appraiser is responsible for conducting performance appraisals for healthcare professionals. They assess the skills, knowledge, and performance of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to identify areas for development and improvement. As a SAS Doctor Appraiser, you will be responsible for conducting appraisals of SAS and Consultants and you will work closely with colleagues to ensure that appraisals are conducted in accordance with relevant guidelines and standards.

Appraisers use various tools and techniques to evaluate performance, such as reviewing patient feedback, observing clinical practice, and analysing performance data. They also provide constructive feedback and guidance to support the professional development of individuals and promote high-quality patient care. In addition, appraisers play a vital role in ensuring that healthcare professionals maintain their professional registration and comply with relevant regulatory requirements.

You can start with your own appraiser and talk with them about how they became one. Your NHS Trust will have insight into the opportunities available. Do check to see if there is local appraiser training internally in your organisation.
