One Step at a Time

One Step at a Time

One Step at a Time shares experiences of cancer journeys from the perspective of patients and their loved ones. The local NHS initiative has produced a series of short films, each providing frank and candid accounts told by local people.

Launched in 2020, the initiative is headed up by Emma Harnett, Macmillan Primary Care Nurse Facilitator at Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board, and Princess Alexandra NHS Hospitals Trust colleagues Shahid Sardar, Associate Director Patient Engagement and Experience and Ann Nutt, Chair of the Patient Panel. The team have a wealth of experience in cancer patient engagement.

Through their work with cancer patient panels, they could see the benefits patients gained from sharing their journeys with one another. The team wanted to create a platform that would allow more stories to be shared with a wider audience. This work led to the creation of One Step at a Time.

In October 2022, One Step at a Time won the Team of the Year Award from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Nursing Awards 2022. This great achievement recognised the hard work put in by the team and the impact of the initiative on local people affected by cancer. Read more about the award on the RCN Awards website
