Sir Peter Gross:

The Rt Hon Lord Justice Gross (Sir Peter Gross) has enjoyed an eminent legal career spanning over 40 years. Following his retirement from the Bench he is now a member of Twenty Essex as a full- time arbitrator.

Before his retirement he was appointed Lead Judge for International Relations in January 2018. In the course of cementing international judicial relationships he has since 2003 visited numerous countries, including Jamaica, Guyana, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Argentina, the USA, Jordan, Brunei, Singapore and Uzbekistan since 2003. In addition he acts as Co-Chairman of the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts (SIFoCC) Case Management Working Group, “Working Presumptions – International Best Practice”, due to report to the SIFoCC meeting in Singapore in March 2020.

On retirement from the Court of Appeal, Sir Peter was in November 2019 appointed President of the Slynn Foundation in, an organisation dedicated to advancing the rule of law internationally.

At the Bar, Sir Peter practised in commercial chambers. From 1989 he was at 3 Essex Court (now Twenty Essex), where he took silk in 1992. He specialised, both as counsel and arbitrator, in heavy international commercial, admiralty and arbitration work. Appointed a Judge of the Queen’s Bench Division in 2001, he was designated a Judge of the Commercial Court in 2002; from 2009 to 2011 he fulfilled the important organisational function of the judge in charge of that court. As well as this he was Presiding Judge of the South-Eastern Circuit from 2005 to 2008, a Judge of the Special Immigration Appeals Commission from 2009 and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Judicial Security from 2009.

Having sat as a Recorder from 2005, Sir Peter was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2010 and became Deputy Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales in October 2011. Thereafter he acted as , Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales from January 2013 to December 2015.

Sir Peter chaired the London Common Law & Commercial Bar Association from 1995 until 1997. He also chaired the Bar Education & Training Committee between 1998 and 2000) and the Bar International Relations Committee in 2001.
