Barnet Council is proud to support London Climate Action Week 2022.

What is London Climate action week?

London Climate Action week is harnessing the power of London for global climate action. LCAW is the annual event bringing together world-leading climate professionals and communities across London and beyond to find practical solutions to climate change.

Founded in 2019, LCAW is the largest independent climate change event in Europe. LCAW is helping to shape our future into one that is net-zero, equitable and resilient. Rooted in our diverse, international city, LCAW uses its global perspective to spark climate action around the world. Come join us this year in harnessing the power of London for global climate action!

Pledge to make one sustainable lifestyle change for week of climate action

For this year’s Climate Action Week (25 June – 3 July), why not pledge to make one small change to your daily routine to make it more sustainable.

Your pledge can be simple, and small changes that will help us towards the national and local ‘net zero’ target of sustainable living.

Barnet Council’s employees have already started making their pledges, which include:

  • Stop using my dryer for all my washing, including sheets and towels
  • Take the 10-minute walk into my local town centre, rather than the five-minute drive
  • Buy my fruit and vegetables without packaging

What we can all do

Climate change is going to affect us all and we will all need to play our part to live sustainably, below is a list of things to think about when trying to reduce the impact we have on the planet.

This certainly isn't a 'how to' guide, but a place to start on your sustainability journey!

  • Find out what your working with by calculating your carbon footprint. You can use the WWF Footprint Calculator to get an estimate of how many tonnes of carbon dioxide you emit. You can't decide how to reduce your impact on climate change if you don't know what it is to start with!
  • Buy less! Of course recycling is great, but if we buy less then we can stop that waste from existing in the first place. Also, look for second hand options were possible. There are sites like eBay, Depop and Facebook market place that are already full of great second-hand finds. Have a look to see if there is a local group or charity where you can buy from too.
  • Fix and repair as much as possible. There are lots of great tutorials online for how to fix and repair your belongings, and there's always someone you can reach out to for help.
  • Reduce your meat consumption. You don't have to be completely vegetarian or vegan but cutting down on your red meat can make a big difference quickly. There's loads of great recipes online, have a look at these recipes from BBC Food or these from Jack Monroe.
  • Take public transport as much as possible. And if you can't avoid using your car, lift share with people nearby.
