Welcome from Kate Miller
With the County Championship season underway and many recreational clubs and leagues starting this month, the domestic cricket season is finally here. Following a successful #GetSetWeekend on 1-2 April, I know that clubs up and down the country are primed to welcome players, spectators, seasonal staff and volunteers for what promises to be an exciting and truly unique summer of cricket.
At time of writing the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket has not yet published its report, but we are expecting it soon. We know the report will contain a number of recommendations on how we can go even further in making our sport inclusive and welcoming to all; a timely reminder that making progress in equity, diversity and inclusion is everyone’s responsibility. In some ways it feels timely that the report is arriving near the start of the season in springtime, a time traditionally associated with renewal. As we head towards warmer weather and sunnier skies, I look forward to seeing the progress we have made so far in action across the summer.
Very best wishes,
Kate Chief Diversity and Communications Officer, ECB |
Our current EDI campaign focus is the holy month of Ramadan, and we send our best wishes to everyone in the cricket network who is observing or fasting during this time. To coincide with Ramadan we have published a blog from Shropshire Cricket Board’s women and girls’ recreational director Zeenat Kaji, and have added a range of new educational resources which we have added to the EDI Content Hub (more information below).
On Sunday 2 April we used the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day to publish a blog covering our partnership with Microsoft, which is helping deliver coding skills to children with autism in schools across the West Midlands, and we will publishing further blogs on neurodiversity later this month. |
The EDI Content Hub is an online resource for the game which shares lived experiences from across the EDI spectrum. On the Hub this month you can hear from Ebadur Rahman from Muslim inclusion experts and ECB partner Nujum, and watch back Nujum’s Ramadan webinar which was held last month. You can also hear from the Lord’s Taverners’ John Stowe, who reflects on his experience of having a son with Down Syndrome.
The Hub is accessed via the ECB e-learning platform: https://edicontenthub.ecb.co.uk/. |
April: Autism Awareness Month; Vaisakhi (14th); Eid-al-Fitr (21st)
May: Deaf Awareness Week (1st-7th); Mental Health Awareness Week (9th-15th); World Day for Cultural Diversity (21st)
Our next major campaign moment will be the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi, which celebrates the formation of the Khalsa in 1699, a group of highly committed Sikhs who are protectors of the faith.
Ahead of the festival we have published a guide for cricket clubs on Sikhism and Sikh inclusion which sets out more information on Vaisakhi, and how clubs can make small changes to be more inclusive of the Sikh faith. From the 14th onwards we will be sharing digital content across all ECB channels.
As always, you can check out our 2023 EDI calendar for relevant awareness days for the rest of the year, including the ones the ECB plans to mark with campaign activity. |
