Cancer survival: Index for sub-Integrated Care Boards, 2005 to 2020

Summary

This release summarises the 1-year cancer survival by sub-Integrated Care Boards (sub-ICBs) for all cancers combined from 2005 to 2020 and followed up to 2021.

The index of cancer survival provides a single number that summarises the overall pattern of cancer survival for each calendar year.

The index has been designed to compare levels of survival over time for individual sub-ICBs (rather than comparing between sub-ICBs) – interpretation should focus on overall trends rather than on small changes in the survival index in a particular year.

We additionally present 1-year net survival estimates for colorectal, lung and female breast cancers.

Key Facts

1-year index of cancer survival for England has increased.

The 1-year index of cancer survival for England has increased from 65.6% in 2005 to 74.1% in 2019 and 74.6% in 2020.

Geographic variation in the 1-year index of cancer survival has narrowed.

The variation in the 1-year index of cancer survival between the sub-ICBs narrowed, with the range in survival estimates reducing from 9.1 percentage points in 2005 to 7.9 percentage points in 2020.

Geographic variation in survival narrowed for colorectal and female breast cancers but not lung cancer.

The range in net survival estimates between sub-ICBs decreased from 11.7 percentage points in 2005 to 5.4 percentage points in 2020 for female breast cancer, decreased from 13.7 percentage points in 2005 to 13.1 percentage points in 2020 for colorectal cancer, but increased from 13.0 percentage points in 2005 to 18.7 percentage points in 2020 for lung cancer.

This work uses data that has been provided by patients and collected by the NHS as part of their care and support. The data is collated, maintained and quality assured by the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service, which is part of NHS England.
