Throughout the last three years, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw our hospitals have sparkled their way through the festive season by placing star lights on our buildings raising over £60,000 in the process for Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Charity.
Our Shining Stars helps to bring some much-needed festive cheer to patients, staff, and visitors of our hospitals whilst also helping us recognise our ‘shining stars’, whilst remembering those who are no longer with us.
Thanks to the support of businesses, schools, community groups, families and individuals, together we have funded a range of projects including a bereavement suite for our emergency department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, our wonderful therapy huskies to support staff wellbeing and aid our patient’s recovery, improvements to our ward environments and equipment to help us enhance patient experience such as TV’s and radios.
These additional extras would not be possible without the support of our community and with your help we can continue to work hard with our Trust to fund innovative and exciting projects that really do make a difference to our patients, their families and our colleagues who care for them.

Sponsor a virtual shining star
In addition to our physical star lights, you can also sponsor a virtual star light for any donation amount of your choice. As we approach this special time of year, we know how important it is to remember the lives of those we have lost and to recognise the people who have gone above and beyond to provide outstanding care.
Our virtual stars will be displayed on screens around the hospital as well as on our charity website, we will also celebrate and remember our shining stars from our virtual pages on our social media platforms throughout December.

“Sponsoring the star came about because we asked our colleagues on-site which local charity they would like to support, and people kept on suggesting the hospital. So, we started fundraising and delivering presents to the Children’s Ward and have carried on ever since. We have sent colouring books, Easter eggs, and even managed to raise funds to purchase a video game console with a stand and a TV for the ward.
“It has really resonated with everyone on-site, and we now have colleagues asking when the gift tree will be back up again,” Jones continued. “People are really invested in it and with the site being only five minutes down the road, they can drive past and see the star that we have sponsored. We’re very pleased to do what we can to help our local hospital.”

“Retford Oaks Academy are pleased to sponsor a star at Bassetlaw and Doncaster hospital this year. It will continue to send out a message of hope and thanks to all of our NHS colleagues who work closely with the school and are parents of our students.
“During the first lockdown in 2020, one of the students in our keyworker hub requested that we showed some message of thanks to parents, like his, who were working hard through the pandemic, which led us to lighting our windows with NHS and Care logos. This simple message of support started with one student expressing their gratitude to those parents and community members who were passing the school on their way to difficult shifts throughout the lockdown.
“This heartfelt support continues to all of the workers, patients, and visitors during the Christmas period.”
The Cross family have sponsored a star in memory of their Mum for the last two years. Sarah Dunning one of the family members said:
“My Mum found her self in hospital throughout December fighting against Covid-19 but she sadly passed away on boxing day 2020. Seeing the stars shining on the hospital buildings bought so much comfort making visiting her each time that little bit easier. My mum adored her grandchildren and great nephews and having to tell young children, especially toddlers that she had passed away was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. We decided to tell them that Nanny is now the brightest star in the sky so continuing to sponsor a star in her memory just feels the right thing to do”
