The aim of this event was to equip the future healthcare leaders with values, skills and knowledge through co-creating this event. This need was identified by a survey of 323 trainee doctors and 23 in-depth interviews. NHS trainee doctors and leaders made up 67% of the event contributors.

What we have attained

Value: being a compassionate clinical leader to provide quality patient care.

Almost 80% trainee doctors (among 44 responses after excluding researchers or duplication) believed that their understanding/confidence in exerting compassion leadership in a team has been substantively or significantly improved after the event.

Skills to build up a supportive work environment

70% trainee doctors believed they have learnt substantively/significantly skills to build up a supportive environment around themselves after the event. This is welcoming given 65% participants stated that they had little or slightly understanding on how to do so before the event. The phase (Dr Yasser Mohammed) highlights their outreaching approach: help, you shall be helped!

Knowledge to pursue a career in medicine.

The majority of trainee doctors believed their knowledge to create a meaningful career in medicine or in academia was substantively or significantly improved, 77% and 68%  respectively. This is a good outcome given 62% trainee doctors who stated to have little or slight knowledge in this regard before the event.

Skills to manage conflict at workplace.

Over half (55%) trainee doctors believe their skills to manage conflicts at workplace was substantively or significantly improved after this event; one in four (26.7%) considers the improvement is to a satisfactory degree. This is encouraging given 66% stated that they had little/slight understanding in this regard before the event. Never leaving an issue unresolved – Dr Galina Gorbatova-shared insights to provide quality patient care through a positive team.

Knowledge to participate and collaborate research projects.

70% trainee doctors considered to have improved such knowledge to a satisfactory degree, substantively or significant. This session was proudly delivered by ABCP members (see the event programme). This is impressive since the same proportion of participants stated that they knew little in this regard before the event.

Feedback from doctors:

“We felt really heard and validated, and you had so much encouragement and trust in ability to be good people. I cannot thank you enough, because we all need to feel that!”

“Thank you, amazing session! Brilliant event! Need more of these!”

“Thank you so much for a great leadership day. It was an amazing reminder of how the system should work and how people should be. And I will definitely be in touch about future academic opportunities.”

Recommendation

Doctors have suggested future events to have a workshop session with scenarios to allow discussions and ideas; spend a bit more time on research sessions. We plan the next event in the later April and early May 2024, based on findings from the second survey which is due to be launched in February, we will need to book big rooms and more chairs.
