Welcome to our second edition of Connect – we are delighted to be in a position to share such positive updates from across our diverse partnership. As a ‘Marmot Community’ dedicated to tackling health inequalities – and in light of the recent measles outbreak in the West Midlands – I would like to thank partners across Cheshire and Merseyside for their combined efforts to protect as many people as possible, with particular emphasis on communities with the lowest MMR uptake. |

Although there has not been an outbreak in Cheshire and Merseyside since 2012, the outbreak in the West Midlands has now been declared a national incident due to the highly contagious nature of the virus (one person with measles can infect up to 20). More than 300 cases (and rising) have already been confirmed in the West Midlands. I know local authority public health teams and local health and care partners are working with the UK Health Security Agency to collectively urge parents and carers to check their children’s vaccination records to ensure they are protected. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 99% effective in protecting against measles and rubella and the vaccine is free on the NHS - irrespective of age. Further information from a recent webinar is available from the Local Government Association and guidance for parents and carers in this video from NHS Cheshire and Merseyside.
