Venice Postpones Visitor Entry Fee Again – Here’s When You’ll Have To Pay

The Italian city of Venice has said it has delayed plans for its entry fee system for visitors, again.

The paid ticketing scheme was due to come into force on January 16, 2023, and has been touted as the first of its kind in the world.

However, local authorities have had to halt the introduction of the booking system as they grapple with logistics.

As such, day trippers to Venice won’t have to pay to enter the city just yet.

Who will have to pay the entry fee to visit Venice?

Visitors to the historic center of Venice will need to book their visit, but not everyone will have to pay.

Travelers staying the night in the city are exempt from the entry fee as they already pay a tourist tax.

However, those who choose to make a day trip to the canal city will need to pay for a ticket. The entry fee hopes to ease issues of overcrowding and unsustainable tourist numbers.

Visitors arriving by both public and private means must pre-register for their visit. A single booking and ticket is valid for traveling to other islands in the lagoon too, such as Murano and Burano.

Some day trippers do not have to pay the entry fee, although they are still required to book. These include students, those traveling to see a family member and residents of the surrounding Veneto region.

When will visitors have to pay to visit Venice?

Earlier this year, Venice city council confirmed the booking and ticket scheme would begin from January 16, 2023.

However, in a statement on Friday, authorities said the introduction of the entry fee has been postponed.

A spokesperson confirmed that the starting date would have to be delayed by at least six months.

How can visitors book tickets for Venice?

Once a starting date has been finalized, an online booking system in several languages will be available for visitors to pre-register for their trip to Venice.

A ticket will be issued in the form of a QR code that visitors should show when asked by ticket controllers.

How much will the entry fee cost for Venice?

The latest information from Venice authorities states that tickets to Venice will vary in price depending on the season.

The entry fee will begin at €3 and can rise to €10 in particularly busy periods.

When visitor numbers are exceptionally low in the city, day trippers may not be required to pay at all.
