Air quality

We have to assess air quality against the requirements of the national Air Quality Strategy. Air Quality is continually reviewed and assessed on a yearly basis.

We produce air quality reports outlining the monitoring that has been undertaken in the district and if anything is likely to impact air quality within an area of the district that is not currently being monitored.  View all air quality review and assessment documents including the recently published 2016 Air Quality Annual Status Report.

The main method of air quality monitoring we use is nitrogen dioxide diffusion tubes. View the data for the nitrogen dioxide diffusion tubes

Consider what you burn

As you may be aware from local media; we have launched a campaign to investigate what impact the burning of solid fuel has on local air quality.

In 2022, Harborough District Council and North West Leicestershire District Council secured joint DEFRA funding, totalling just over £27,000, to improve our knowledge of ‘particulate matter’ – the term for solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air.

The campaign explores the potential impact on health, and the quality of the air we breathe, from the burning of solid fuel including:

  • log burners
  • wood stoves
  • barbecues
  • bonfires
  • chimineas

How can you help?

Crucial to the campaign is support from residents. Please take part in our solid fuel survey here - Air Quality Questionnaire

We really appreciate your support – your answers will help us understand more about air quality and solid fuel burning across the district.
