About the Community Asset Transfer
Local groups can apply for long term leases on council buildings to make them community hubs for projects and initiatives that support Westmorland and Furness Council Plan priorities.
The main criteria for any application is that it is sustainable and financially viable so it can bring long term benefits for local people.
CATs provide an opportunity for more efficient and effective use of buildings and land currently owned by the council, giving local people and communities greater control over local assets and the services delivered from them.

Case Study: The Old Courthouse in Shap
An excellent example of a successful CAT is The Old Courthouse in Shap where a group of local volunteers with a passion for retaining community facilities and services in the building formed their own trust and a robust business plan to take over the building from the council.
Since submitting their applications in 2013, the group has continued to operate their own community hub. Now, ten years on, it is a warm, comfortable, well-used venue with a modern interior. It is home to nursery and school groups, local and touring artists and speakers, while also retaining regular library, playgroup and social interaction users.
