I am a historian of Britain at NYU.

Broadly trained in modern European history, I also work on urban history, intellectual history, and the history of science.

I’m especially interested in the history of political culture, and have written about meritocracy, social democracy, neo-conservatism, and various forms of liberalism.

My current research looks at the role of the nation in British historical writing since the nineteenth century.

Since 2015, with colleagues at Cambridge and Columbia, I have run the New York-Cambridge Training Collaboration in modern British history (NYCTC). I am also the inaugural director of NYU’s collaboration with the Global Urban History Project (GUHP).
